The Scholarship

DETAILS

The Richard Antwi Scholarship champions Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic aspiring music business professionals. Supported by all three UK major record labels, music publishers, and several of the top independent music companies and music law firms, the scholarship continues Richard Antwi’s legacy of supporting young people with talent and ambition.

Awarded in conjunction with the University of Westminster in the heart of London, and the MA Music Business Management, the scholarship bridges academic study in music industries, research, and the professional world of music business. Richard held the course in high esteem and contributed as a guest lecturer.

The Richard Antwi Scholarship is an annual award, which found its first scholar in 2018.

The scholarship is now funded by Sony Music UK, Universal Music Group, Warner Music UK, Sony Music Publishing, XL Records, Beggars Group, Young, Clintons, Hoare Associates and Modest!.

The scholarship emerged from the abundance of goodwill Richard left in his wake amongst many of the sector’s creators and shapers, who experienced his support and counsel directly. Wretch 32 (artist, 0207 Def Jam Creative Director) and Taponeswa Mavunga (Director of Africa Sony Music UK) were close to Richard during his life and support the work of the scholarship, which seeks to continue Richard’s legacy of supporting young people with sharp instincts, exceptional talent, drive and ambition, to find their pathway and increase representation at every career stage in the industry.

The scholarship includes a full fee waiver, a stipend of £22,000 paid in monthly instalments, and mentorship to guide scholar’s professional focus and aspirations.

THE SCHOLARSHIP & The Music Business Management MA

This course is highly regarded in both music business education and the industry at large as best-in-class; one that prepares its students to become the next generation of music industry leaders and entrepreneurs.

At the heart of the scholarship lies the opportunity to excel on the MA. In addition to the aforementioned benefits, the scholarship is a unique experience elevated by the knowledge and expertise of the scholarship team, who provide continued support to our scholars. This support extends beyond the duration of the MA, and Richard Antwi scholars are welcomed into a growing family of hard working, ambitious individuals all at the forefront of the music industries.

The MA attracts individuals from all over the globe and from diverse musical backgrounds; from musicians — including classical composers, techno DJ’s, and pop music producers — to music entrepreneurs, social media influencers, and music promoters.

Reflecting the diversity of our students’s backgrounds and ambitions, the MA takes an interdisciplinary approach to music management that places the value of music at the heart of everything we do. The course is designed to enable our students to confidently navigate the complexities of the music ecosystem, so that they can develop and shape their own professional music ambitions in this fast moving, highly networked and competitive (and often contradictory) environment.

The MA Music Business Management academic team are proud of their track record working with industry to develop and shape the future of the music industries practices by bringing the value of music to the forefront, and putting inclusivity, diversity and mental health at the centre of all our teaching.

The course is intense, exciting, and fun. It’s a place where lifelong friendships are formed, as we come together to scrutinise and shape the future of the global music industries.
