CLASS OF 2020

In 2019 Esther Lenda Bokuma was welcomed to the Scholarship family after receiving an offer for a place on the MA Music Business Management.

After earning a degree in English & Italian, along with a PGSE teaching certification to keep the bills paid while she developed her music, Esther decided to return to higher education to create new opportunities more aligned with her passion. 

We sat down with Esther to discuss her experience on the scholarship, the MA, and her further aspirations in life.

Upon seeing a tweet about the scholarship, Esther reached out to the course leader of the MA, Sally Anne Gross, and inquired. Her experience was seamless and quick, and soon enough, she found herself in the middle of her application process…

Esther’s Experience

Once in, she found herself welcomed into a family of educators and industry professionals who propelled her into music at warp speed. Numerous have been the casual phone calls between Esther and the scholarship team with much needed advice. These proved instrumental for her professionally, but more importantly, gave her the opportunity to articulate and solidify her own voice and calling in music and beyond.

Esther’s ADvice to future applicants

Applying for a scholarship, and entering (or re-entering) higher education can be an intimidating step. For Esther, it was one that changed her outlook on life as a musician, an aspiring industry professional, and most of all, as an individual with a meaningful vision for the future of Black women in music and beyond. Her own musical practice, her research, and her deep interest in the current and future fluctuations of the industry meant that this bold step would prove essential to her growth. Her advice? Take the leap if it serves your ambitions.
